Help me plan my setup?

Post by Barbarian22 »

Hi everyone.
I am still quite new to considering an 8HP swap with the Turbolamik TCU for my project truck. Engine will be an EROD LT1 from GM Performance.
Previously I was going to run a 4l80e transmission, and I had already purchased the 4 Speed Lokar shifter as well as the Dakota Digital GSS-3000 gear indicator sender.

I will be using the Lokar shifter and instead of running the cable to the 4l80e, I will connect it to the Dakota Digital encoder which I just measured to be 0-5v .
So, ill send that 0-5v signal to the TCU for gear selector signal.
I will also be using paddle shifters behind the aftermarket steering wheel (Momentary switches), which short to ground.

But I am just slightly confused about how to put the TCU in to manual mode -

A) Does my mechanical shifter need to have a 5th detent, a sport/manual detent?Or can I get into manual mode by leaving the mechanical shifter in D, and then just using the paddles to bump gears up or down?

B) Does the rotary encoder need to be used to enter a manual mode?
And speaking of that,
Is there a way to access different "programs/tunes" without using an encoder? Maybe press a button to change from a more mild daily driving calibration to more of a sporty calibration geared for spirited driving?

Just cant quite figure this out on the forums or in the manual online.

Last 2 little things im trying to figure out before fully committing to this 8hp swap!
I am super excited to move forward with this swap, it will take my build to an even further level of customization! The added gears will be a welcome addition for this build which will be more of a cruiser/daily driver. Im sure will see some added mpg with it. (My dad's dodge ram has the 8hp and when we go on our 2.5 hour drive to the desert we can cruise at 80-85mph doing around 2100-2000rpm!)

Thank you!
